It isn't without its gameplay flaws, as the opening sequence has Link doing chores around his village like herding goats and searching for a missing cat, which is not exactly exciting. The controls in Twilight Princess aren't as unique as those in Skyward Sword, but that does mean they're more accessible to the average player. Her personality is much more dynamic, as she comes across as an anti-hero before her background is fully explored. While Link's childhood friend, Ilia, never quite reaches the heights of Zelda from Skyward Sword, his companion Midna far surpasses Fi. The overworld in Skyward Sword is vacant and the surface areas only feature a handful of members for each race. Each area Link ventures to feels more like a community. The town surrounding the castle is bustling and packed with citizens. However, at least this Hyrule feels lived in. In comparison, the pastel-like art direction in Skyward Sword is much more joyful. Its tone and aesthetic are exceptionally gloomy, making it one of the darker installments alongside Majora's Mask. Much like how Breath of the Wild was a response to complaints of linearity in Skyward Sword, Twilight Princess was a response to complaints of the cute, cell-shaded art style of The Wind Waker. Twilight Princess, on the other hand, gives players several options of playing whether it be Wii, GameCube or the HD re-release on Wii U. While its controls led to inventive puzzles and items, its over-reliance on them turned some players away and have kept it locked to one console. Certain copies came packaged with a Wii MotionPlus controller so that players could play the game as precisely as possible.

The element that sets Skyward Sword apart from other games in the series is its controls. Unfortunately, the same strong characterization wasn't given to Link's companion, Fi, who's robotic personality and hand-holding design made for constant interruptions while playing. When she gets knocked out of the sky by the slimy Ghirahim, players actually want to save her this time.
Zelda herself is Link's childhood friend, which leads to the strongest bond between the two in any Zelda game including Twilight Princess. Link's rival Groose is hilariously big-headed and charming despite being a nuisance. Skyloft, Link's home, does feature some highly memorable characters. There is supposed to be an entire race above the clouds, but one wouldn't know it given how devoid the sky is of islands to explore. One of the biggest criticisms aimed at Skyward Sword is its empty overworld. It's set at the beginning of the timeline, focusing on the Hylians centuries after the race was moved above the clouds by their Goddess, Hylia. Skyward Sword has gotten plenty of hate among Zelda fans over the years, some it unfair.
